Arping. Arping is an ARP level ping utility. It's good for finding out if an IP is works around a bug in libpcap on Solaris, and implements gratuitous ARP (-U).

A Gratuitous ARP is an ARP Response that was not prompted by an ARP Request. The Gratuitous ARP is sent as a broadcast , as a way for a node to announce or update its IP to MAC mapping to the entire network.

This is a surprise. Does anybody have ideas about this? Must research! It doesn't seem to here - I'm sending from another machine via '/usr/bin/arping -A -c 1 -q -I ath0 192.168.0.2', and Wireshark shows the packets coming in, but the arp table, as shown by 'arp', remains empty. I can't seem to find much documentation on this.

Gratuitous in this case means a request/reply that is not normally needed according to the ARP specification (RFC 826) but could be used in some cases. A gratuitous ARP request is an AddressResolutionProtocol request packet where the source and destination IP are both set to the IP of the machine issuing the packet and the destination MAC is the broadcast address ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff. Ordinarily, no reply packet will Send an unsolicited (gratuitous) ARP. Let’s manually shoot out a single unsolicited ARP “reply” (using arping) to the router from the Linux client: Wireshark on the Linux client shows the action: “debug arp” on the router also shows some action: Let’s check the router’s ARP table now with “ sh arp “: Ok, we see the Linux client now. An ARP Packet contains an " Opcode " field which indicates whether the packet is a request or a response.

2007-03-20 2005-12-22 arp-ping.exe - an implementation of ping via arp lookup (Download Current Version)Description: Arp-ping.exe is an implementation of "ping" over arp lookup. It is similar in behavior to the "arping" *nix program, but is an independent implementation and works somewhat differently internally. Check out arping-scan-net.sh, included in arping. It scans an IP network for a certain MAC address. It's only needed for those that don't answer broadcast pings (also, you can try the multicast IP 224.0.0.1), but when all else fails, the script *will* find the box (unless it's actually not answering ICMP pings). 2016-09-02 This is where the arping tool comes in. Like ping, arping pings network hosts using network layer ARP packets.
